Toronto FC defeat New York Red Bulls, Stay Alive in Playoff Race

Following a rocky few weeks, things look like they’re back on track for Toronto FC after Wednesday’s win over the New York Red Bulls. Jozy Altidore opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a wonderful flick and Alejandro Pozuelo scored his 9th goal this season 20 minutes later to double Toronto’s advantage. The Red Bulls pulled one back just after the hour mark but Ashtone Morgan capitalized off a defensive error in the 73rd minute to restore Toronto’s 2 goal advantage with his second career MLS goal, securing all 3 points for the home side. With that victory, Toronto has won back to back matches for the first time since March and now occupies the 6th spot in the Eastern Conference.

Prior to this little run, the Canadian side had been in truly terrible form. They had won just 1 of their previous 11 matches and were slowly fading out of the playoff picture. A big factor in that poor run for TFC was the fact that they were without several key players who left to participate in this summer’s Gold Cup.

Captain Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Jonathan Osorio, Omar Gonzalez, and Ashtone Morgan were all called upon to represent their countries and with so many key members of the squad missing, Greg Vanney’s side just couldn’t cope. It feels like no coincidence that once the tournament ended and Toronto’s squad returned to full strength, their fortunes started to change. No one will have been more relieved to see his players return injury free than Vanney who spoke of the difference that having a full squad at his disposal makes.

“It’s nice when everybody’s around. The good part of it is that you do have options when you want to make an impact on the game. You have different types of players with experience who can do different things.”

With two back to back wins under their belt, defender Ashtone Morgan hopes that his side can keep up their good performances in the coming weeks.

“A big thing in this league is about momentum. We’re picking some steam up, we’re just going to continue.”

Toronto’s next match will be at home against a Houston Dynamo side that was smashed 5-0 by Atlanta United earlier this week. With momentum on their side, TFC enter as big favorites and will look to end this busy week with 3 wins out of 3.
