Buster Posey Exits After Being Hit in Helmet

With two out and a runner on third in the bottom half of the first inning, Buster Posey stepped into the batters box against Taijuan Walker. Posey fouled off a splitter, then got hit in the head by a 94 mph fastball. The sound of the ball meeting Posey’s helmet echoed around AT&T Park, and was followed by a collective, horrified gasp as every Giants fan registered the incident. Giants manager Bruce Bochy and team doctor Dave Groeschner exited the dugout to check on their star catcher. Posey remained seated and seemed to say “I’m fine,” but Groeschner and Bochy, who have lost multiple players to concussions over the last three years, didn’t take any chances. They pulled Posey and he walked off the field under his own power.

The Giants are likely to be cautious with Posey, given that he’s a catcher and is likely to take foul tips off the mask when he’s behind the dish.
