Postseason Outlook: Maryland Terrapins

Melo Trimble saves the senior day with a three pointer at the buzzer and the Terrapins finish the season at the 24-7 and 12-6 in Big Ten play. As they head towards the Big Ten Tournament and the big dance, there are some questions that surround the team. Here is your postseason primer regarding the team that wears red, white, black and gold.

Where is Maryland seeded in the Big Ten Tournament? With their win against Michigan State, the Terps clinched the 3rd seed in the Big Ten Tournament. The top four teams receive a double BYE, and move on to the quarterfinals automatically.

Is Maryland a Lock for the NCAA Tournament? Despite some of their recent struggles, winning their last two games has basically secured them a spot in the tournament.

What seed are the Terrapins looking at in the NCAA Tournament? The Terps really hurt themselves with their lack of competition in the out of conference schedule. The Terrapins played seven teams with RPIs 150+. Their best win was on the road against Minnesota, and their second best was at a neutral site against Oklahoma State. They also had four “bad” losses to teams who’s RPIs are higher than 50, including Penn State, Nebraska and Pittsburgh. CBS Sports has the Terrapins as high as a #5 seed while ESPN’s Bracketologist Joe Lunardi has them at a #8 seed. Look for them to be around a low #6 or a high #7 seed in the big dance.

Will Melo Trimble stay for his Senior Year? Melo Trimble seems to have somehow peaked in his freshman year. Despite a huge outing at Northwestern and a big time shot against the Spartans, his numbers are down. His points per game is slightly up at 16.9 but so are his turnovers. He’s looking like a middle second round pick according to the majority of the mocks. Unless he takes this team on a run in the big dance, it seems that he should stay for his senior year and lead a young team with almost all of the players returning.

What is considered a success for the 2016-2017? Maryland came into the season as the preseason #25 team according to the Associated Press poll. They have reached but haven’t exceeded the preseason expectations. If the Terrapins could pull a upset in the second round and get to the sweet 16, that seems like a success. Next year, with all of the cohesiveness and chemistry this team has, they can come back with some higher goals.
