CBB Power Rankings: 6 Weeks Until Selection Sunday

NOVA17

With 6 weeks to go, it has been a rather topsy-turvy season of college basketball. The most recent polls have come out, and balloters ran the gamut on where teams should be placed tw0-thirds of the way through the college basketball season. Polls might say one thing, but rankings say something else.

  1. Villanova Wildcats (#2 in AP Poll)– The defending champs just continue to keep it rolling. Jay Wright has coached his team to a 22-2 start. Their two losses have been on the road to respectable Big East opponents in Marquette and Butler. Kris Jenkins’ decision to stay for his senior year looks to be paying off.
  2. Gonzaga Bulldogs (#1 in AP Poll)- They just don’t play anybody! Despite that, they have gotten off to a 24-0 start, and realistically in the WCC, they should end the season with a goose-egg in the loss column. The tournament? Might be a different story. They have only faced one ranked team this season (Iowa State, who is no longer ranked).
  3. Kansas Jayhawks (#3 in AP Poll)- Tough loss at home on Saturday to Iowa State, but they will bounce back. They have too much talent in their backcourt not to. The big 12 tournament will be nuts, but Kansas will be a slight favorite.
  4. North Carolina Tar Heels (#8 in AP Poll)- Despite one slip-up at Miami, the Tar Heels are rolling right now. Justin Jackson decision to come back has been a great one, and Joel Berry has been growing into a great guard. For some reason, they are an underrated 21-4 team.
  5. Louisville Cardinals (#4 in AP Poll)- Loss to Virginia in Charlottesville really won’t hurt them that much. They have a stiff task ahead, having to travel to Syracuse (who has knocked off two top ten teams at home already) and UNC before the regular season is over.
  6. Arizona Wildcats (#9 in AP Poll)- Being blitzed in Eugene was not a pretty sight to Sean Miller, yet the ‘Cats arguably have the most talented team in the loaded Pac-12. They will be a #1 seed in the tournament if they play to their potential.
  7. Oregon Ducks (#5 in AP Poll)- Big win at home against Arizona on Saturday sets them up with a big matchup UCLA in California on Thursday. Another “prove yourself” game.
  8. UCLA Bruins (#10 in AP Poll)- Third Pac-12 team in a row, and for good reason. This team can shoot the lights out, but have to play better perimeter defense if they want to go deep in March.
  9. Baylor Bears (#6 in AP Poll)- Does Baylor ever play a game that isn’t close? They have to start winning in more convincing fashion to move up this list.
  10. Wisconsin Badgers (#7 in AP Poll)- In a weak Big Ten conference, the Badgers sit at 20-3. They  play low scoring close games until Bronson Koening bails them out in the last five minutes. How long will that keep going?
