The Los Angeles Rams’ invested significant draft picks in trading up to the first overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft to select Jared Goff from California. As the season opener approaches, Goff sits at third on the Rams depth chart and will be inactive for the season opener.
Goff is behind starter Case Keenum and 2015 third-round pick Sean Mannion on the Rams depth chart. After investing so highly in Goff, it is a very interesting decision by the Rams to put their franchise quarterback so deep on its depth chart.
Goff’s numbers through preseason were not overly impressive, but for the current state of the Rams roster it makes sense to let the rookie play and develop his game. Goff ended the preseason with 22 of 49 passes for 232 yards, with 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, 2 fumbles and 4 sacks.
Head coach Jeff Fisher was commended Goff for his preseason work, but affirmed that Keenum is his starter for now.
“Jared’s had a great camp. So has Sean,” said Fisher. “Case is clearly our starter.”
Fisher is stressing patience with Goff and does not want to rush his quarterback into playing time if he does not believe Goff is ready to take over the team.
“We’re in a good place,” said Fisher. “Regardless of what everybody else is saying out there, [Goff is] our quarterback; he’s going to be our franchise player. It’s just not right now.”
Goff must take this experience holding the clipboard on the sidelines seriously to help break down the game for his playing future. Goff will likely see starting snaps at some point this season so he must stay patient and treat each week as if he is prepared to go out and play.
