FC Barcelona has been very busy this summer bringing in plenty of new faces to the Camp Nou to help reinforce the squad. Even after a strong season in which Barça won both the Copa Del Rey and La Liga, Luis Enrique has still spent big money to bring some major names to the Camp Nou.
The Catalan giants have already made three big signings this summer, bringing in the French duo of Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne as well as former Barcelona B player Denis Suarez.
Midfielder Denis Suarez was the first to make the move to the Camp Nou, signing for the club on July 4th. The 22-year-old Spaniard, who joined Barcelona from Villarreal, is an exciting young talent known for his skill on the ball and passing ability. Though he won’t jump straight into the side’s first team, Denis Suarez will still feature heavily for the La Liga champions and fill in for Andres Iniesta when needed. Like Iniesta, the young Spaniard is very crafty with the ball at his feet and has the ability to split open defenses.
Shortly after, the French defensive duo of Lucas Digne and Samuel Umtiti made their to the Camp Nou and signed within days of each other. Left back Lucas Digne, who came from Paris Saint-Germain, will likely have the smallest impact out of the three new players, as current Barcelona left back Jordi Alba is unlikely to be dethroned anytime soon. However, with Barcelona competing on so many different fronts, Digne will still get ample playing time with the Spanish side next season, just not in the bigger matches.
Samuel Umtiti on the other hand, might just break into Luis Enrique’s starting 11. After a strong showing in the Euros with France, Umtiti has proven that he has the skill to become a major figure at the Camp Nou. The Frenchman fits the Barcelona mold very well as he is comfortable with the ball at his feet and is more than capable of playing out of the back. The 22-year-old could very well slot in next to Pique at the heart of Barcelona’s defense and push Javier Mascherano back into the midfield. Also very strong in the air, Umtiti could provide Barça with one of the strongest aerial defenses in Europe should he partner Gerard Pique.
Barcelona’s three signings will surely be great additions to the squad, but Luis Enrique will likely keep the checkbook open until August. It is reported that the Catalan club is still in the hunt for a striker to relieve some of the pressure off the front three of Messi, Neymar and Suarez.
Regardless of whoever else Luis Enrique brings in this summer, his side will likely rank among the top two or three in the world next season. With the immense quality he already has at his disposal, Enrique will have his sights set very high come the start of the season.
