New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has just come out and given his opinion on the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry. Mourinho, who is regarded as one of the best managers in history, has seemingly changed his mind on which player he prefers.
In an interview with English news outlet The Express, Mourinho gave his picks for the three best players ever. “For me the top three players in history are Messi, Pele and Maradona,” Mourinho said. The Manchester United manager notably left out Portuguese compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, a player he has previously praised as the best ever.
Back in 2013, when Jose Mourinho was Cristiano Ronaldo’s manager at Real Madrid, he was adamant that his star man was better than Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. “He is the best. The best in the world, yes. Probably the best ever,” Mourinho claimed three years ago. “I saw Maradona a couple of times. I never saw Pele. But Cristiano is amazing. This man is the best.”
Mourinho’s comments come just after Spanish legend Xavi came out and said that he believes no one will ever come close to reaching Messi’s level. “For me, there is no heir to Messi. There will never be one. There will be very good footballers, but nobody at Messi’s level,” Xavi said. “To be at the top for so many years, winning so many individual and team trophies, will be impossible to surmount. Though now they try to sell the story of the Cristiano and Messi battle, those of us who know football, know there is no comparison. When Messi ends his career, there will be Neymar, Eden Hazard and five or 10 players at a similar level, but none with the unquestionable superiority of Messi.”
Lionel Messi is considered by many to be the greatest player ever and his 5 Ballon D’ors make it hard to argue against him. Though Ronaldo will undoubtedly also go down amongst the best in history, he will always have trouble eclipsing the incredible little Argentine.
