Are the New York Yankees Buyers or Sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline?

The New York Yankees are 40-42 and are 4.5 games back of a wild card spot, but is still within striking distance of making a run for a playoff spot. The Yankees front office has a tough decision ahead of them to decide whether they will be buyers or sellers at the MLB trade deadline.

Rumors have had the Yankees as both buyers and sellers. Many suggest the Yankees should concede and sell high on players of interest while others suggest the Yankees should buy and add a potential arm to the rotation or another bat.

One pitcher the Yankees are rumored to have interest in is Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Matt Moore. Moore is 5-5 with a 4.54 ERA and 93 strikeouts, but could be a solid fit for a team contending for a playoff spot in need of a starter. “He’s become a name on the top of the list of many teams if the Rays decide to part with him,” stated Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was non-committal on the Yankees approach for upcoming potential trades. “If it’s something that makes sense for the short and long-term, we’ll decipher it, go through it,” Cashman stated.

Cashmere did state the Yankees will keep its ears and eyes open in for potential additions to the team for the now or subtractions to the team for the future. “I’ve certainly encouraged all clubs that have any interest in players to … if they want to make some offers they want me to consider and maybe ownership to consider I’ll take it to ownership and it’s my obligation to do so. It doesn’t mean we’re in sell mode, but it certainly means that we’re open to everything and anything just like we were this winter,” stated Cashman.

It is a tough reality for the Yankees to potentially be considered sellers at the deadline, but with owners who are known to spend the team should always consider to add talent and compete. The Yankees should surely consider themselves buyers at the MLB trade deadline as they are still in playoff contention, but if the right deal approaches them for one of their veterans they must be wise in this situation.
