The Tennessee Titans used the 45th overall selection in the NFL Draft on Alabama and Heisman Trophy running back Derrick Henry. The Titans are investing significantly into the running game by selecting Henry and trading for DeMarco Murray this offseason.
The Titans are in an extreme rebuilding mode as they build around franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota and are under a new regime of general manager Jon Robinson. The Titans need as much talent as possible to get back to completing for the playoffs which is why stockpiling talented running backs is not a mistake.
Robinson believes Henry will complement Murray very well. Robinson stated, “DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry are a 1 and 1A situation. Henry is a strong and fast runner.”
Many would think after Murray’s complaints of a lack of carries in Philadelphia he would be upset with this pick, but that is not the case. Murray was consulted for this selection and he endorsed it. Titans head coach Mike Mularkey reached out to Murray and he stated stated, “First of all, he loved the pick, And he said, ‘He’s going to make me better and I am going to do the same for him.’ He said, ‘I’m going to do whatever I can to make him a great player‘.”
The Titans are not expected to be a competitor for a playoff spot in this upcoming season, but adding a talent such as Henry is putting the Titans in the right direction. We will see this season whether the duo of Henry and Murray will become a force or an issue of splitting carries.
